About the research group
The Geochemistry & Paleoclimate Research Group was established in 2006 in the Institute of Geochemistry of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Its main focus is the investigation, using geochemical tools and methods, of how past climate change processes and surface evolution are preserved in geological formations, with particular emphasis on processes occurring in the Carpathian Basin as a result of climate change. The group's research activities also include the study of current climate change processes and their future development using climate models. The research group investigates a wide range of geological formations and archives, including sections from major extinction events, travertines, speleothems and cave sediments, ice cores, loess-paleosol sequences, landforms and sediments associated with past glaciations, river terraces, and mussel and gastropod shells found in lacustrine and terrestrial (e.g. loess) sediments, as well as soils and groundwater.
